I just my 93 typhoon about 3 weeks ago. it had an engine and tranny rebuild at about 90 thousand miles it now has 104. the guy I got it from said it only needed a boost controller and it would be good to go.
Well I'll just say it was a little more involved than that. Never the less, I was and still am very excited about the potential of this truck. This will be my third turbo vehicle (1st was a 94 civic ex greddy turbo kit) (2nd 91 turbo mr2) so I'm familiar with turbo's. First things I noticed after driving the Ty home was the boost was spiking at like twenty. The engine would stall after coming to a stop sometimes and just didnt have much power when the boost kicked in. I found that the truck had an external wastgate which was teed together with the internal wastegate which ment the two wastegates were fighting over who was going to control the boost resulting in a major spike well I dedicated the line to the external and my boost was down to a steady 10psi. So I took it out the next day for a cruise and trouble struck on my way home started loosing serious power and heard a knock. Ended up bieng a rocker stud pulled out. As I was inspecting this issue I found other problems that probably caused the stud to pull out. the overflow tube from the radiator and the intercooler were teed and had another tube that should have led to an overflow tank but surprise no overflow tank just a hose free floating in the engine compartment. Intercooler was bone dry and the radiator was about half empty. So I think the combo of the non intercooled air causing detenation and the engine running hot allowed the stud to pop out.
Next I decided to do a tune up,fixed a few bad vac lines, I adjusted valve lash, replaced external coil, plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor. noticed the wires were on the old cap 180 out from the way they are supposed to be. so after I replaced everything I tried to put the plug wires in the correct location well got nothing but backfire so I switched the wires 180 around and it runs fine. This brings me to my main question. Its obvious to me that my distributer was intalled 180 out. By changing the plugs around 180 to compinsate for the dist even though the engines runs fine, does this mess with the way the ecu pulls timing under boost conditions or any other negative affect? Has anyone else used or even heard of this method of fixing a 180 out dist?
