I have did some searching but could not find the answer so I had to post to ask?

Can the stock IC radiator be used as a trans cooler?

I have purchased a trans cooler and I can install it where the IC radiator is but It would work much bester if I could just use the one thats already there.

Has anyone done this? Good or bad Idea?

Let me hear it fellers... :D

It should work. thats a lot of exta fluid. Are you going to make the inlet and outlet of the IC smaller to adapt to the smaller tranny lines? I think you may be better off just buying an aftermarket cooler. That lower IC is heavy anyways

Yeah, I can adapt the lines to fit. But I guess I never thunk about the weight issue. I just like the idea that it is already there and it can work..

i used some aluminum tubing and made a mount for my trans cooler . the thing on top is my trans temp sensor in the remote housing .

using the lower cche as a trans cooler seems like too much .

The stock IC heat exchanger will NOT work. We hooked it up at a radiator repair shop and it blew the tank at 150psi. Just not made for that pressure. that location for a trans cooler is decent but IMHO it takes a lot of work for it to do its job down there. Here is what I did

You will definitely need a scoop. It just doesn't flow much air there. I gained 10-20* without one.

it sits up higher than the stocker did . i left it flat between the rails to keep it safe . not really needed with the 80e but i had it when i swapped and going a/a opened up the spot so i kept it .

Re: IC rad as TRANS cooler?

Im actually using the famed "aux IC" mod with taking a hayden cooler and mounting it behind the grille....but instead of the aux IC, im actually using it for the trans.

I removed the stock trans lines, used some braided and -6 AN fittings that I got off Christian Dionne, ran those from the aux cooler to the trans and capped off the radiator ports and just use the aux. Requires only a bit of cutting on the middle hood/rad core brace to make fit. Non intrusive, and easy access if needed.

You should use the water to trans cooler in the rad too, it actually works better than just an air to trans cooler. Just an air to trans cooler is not recommended but a water to trans cooler is along with adding an air to trans cooler in line with it is good.
